Principles of Sociology A study of human nature from the standpoint of the molding influences of the social heritage and of social interaction. The effects on culture of human biology, population factors, race, and geography. The basic social institutions of the family, education, religion, play and art, political and economic organization are shown both in their interrelationships and in their effects on human behavior. Social problems and breakdown are viewed against the background of technological and social change, social values, and attempts at social planning. Sociology 2. Social Psychology A study of the social factors which influence human behavior; an eclectic approach to the study of personality, with applications; the determination of personality in terms of human interaction, culture patterns, social organization. Sociology 4, Introduction of Social Problems This course attempts to "apply" sociology to the problems of social experience. The means and methods of collecting data on a problem, the subject of social maladjustment, and the discovery and utilization of the controls of the causative conditions are considered. The major problems faced are poverty, crime, immigration, race, family social hygiene, mental defects, housing, public opinion, and the activities for a planned society, with emphasis on the conservation of natural and human resources. Sociology 8. Marriage and Family Open to men and women. This course seeks to contribute to a wholesome, positive viewpoint for the purpose of achieving the finest satisfactions in marriage. Discussion develops a consideration of the general principles which guide courtship, engagement, marriage and family life, and the more recent contributions of science in relation to these experiencs. 12 Spanish 1. Elementary Spanish The emphasis for the beginner in Spanish is on conversation. The Latin-American form is the principal form of speech used. The instruction is associated with Latin-American data of interest to all prospective travelers, students, and business men working toward pleasure or business trips t o the Latin-American countries. Simple conversation in Spanish is begun as soon as the class has mastered the principles of pronunciation and has acquired a simple vocabulary. Spanish 4. Intermediate Spanish A continuation of Spanish 1. Water Color Painting and Oils This course covers creative painting in oils and water color. Individual student selection and independent interpretation of subjects for pictures: landscape, figure, still life, flowers, abstractions. Lectures, criticisms, and studio painting. Business and Secretarial Science Business is one of the most attractive fields of service and opportunity open to anyone. It offers congenial employment and associations, immediate opportunities, good incomes to both sexes, and, because of its great diversification, it can and does use a broad variety of talents. These courses are designed to meet the needs of beginning students in business, adults who are employed during the day, veterans on-the-job training, who desire courses to meet the college study requirements, and others in specialized business and administrative fields. They meet the everyday practical and credit needs of workers and students. The instructors are specialists in college, business, or professions. Business 1, 2. Elementary Accounting The aim of this course is to teach the fundamentals of recording and interpreting the financial operations of business. The student is introduced to the standard elements of accounting, assets, liabilities and capital. He is instructed in the preparation and interpretation of balance sheets and profit and loss statements. Considerable attention is given to practical work in journalizing, posting, and the construction of work sheets. The first quarter is devoted to the accounting problems of the individual proprietorship. The second quarter deals with the accounting problems of partnership and corporations. Business 3, 4. Intermediate Accounting Continuation of Business land 2. The course covers theories of corporation accounts; valuation of capital stock; dividends, reserves, and surplus; sinking and other funds; consolidations and mergers, etc. Laboratory work consists of illustrative problems and a master set dealing with a manufacturing corporation. 13 |
