The dredge "Franciscan" was used on the project, being brought up from Long Beach after it completed project there. The unit price project was started in February 1960 completed in April of 1961 and cost $835,000. This job was unique in unusual levee conditions were encountered. Because of these conditions ,3 necessary to hire a much larger levee force than thought necessary, was then that someone thought of the possibility of using a helicopter, The reason for this was that the levee pipe manipulation was the whole problem. The Rick Helicopter Service of South San Francisco was notified and after several experiments, their services were retained. The shore pipe was cut into 16-ft. sections and a large helicopter (a Vertal V-42) then moved the pipe to the desired locations. As a result, Utah was able to cut down substantially on their levee force. It is believed that this was the first time a helicopter was ever used in connection with a dredging project. The owner of this project was the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. Mr. H, D. Reiners was the project Manager on this project. 9) Leslie Salt Dredging This project, also located in Redwood City, was performed simultaneously with the Port of Redwood City job above.
