Show this project commenced on January 21, 1959 and work was completed March 2, 1960, 198 days ahead of schedule. This project is a parr of the Snowy-Tumit Development which is a portion of the Snowy Mountains scheme. The name of the reservoir is also Tantangara and it has a storage capacity of 300, 000 acre feet. Purposes for construction of the project were power and irrigation. The owner of this project is the Snowy Mountain Authority. Utah Australia Limited (sponsor) bid jointly with Brown & Root Sudamericana Ltd. for this work. Included with the dam was the Murrumbidgee-Encumbene tunnel. The total cost of both the dams and the tunnel was $14, 500, 000. 25) Murrumbidgee-Encumbene Tunnel Tunnel driving involved the excavation of 236, 000 cubic yards of rock, the installation of 1,160, 000 lbs. of steel supports, and the placing of over 13, 000 cubic yards of concrete lining in the tunnel. Work commenced June 13, 1958 and holed through on May 24, 1960. New world records for tunnelling • ere made and broken. The final record stood at 590 feet of tunnel driven at one working face in a period of six consecutive days. Water first flowed on February 25, 1961, five months ahead of schedule. As stated above, this tunnel work was included with the dam (Tantangara) and cost $14, 500, 000. This work was done jointly by Utah Australia Limited (sponsor) and Brown & Root Sudamericana Ltd. Our cost was $9, 581, 726. 26) Petrochemical Plant A petrochemical plant for Vacuum Oil Company Pty. Ltd. in Altona, Victoria. Work was done by a joint venture of Flour International S. A. (sponsor) and Utah Australia Limited. Construction required excavation of 128, 000 cubic yards of earth and rock, placing of 38,000 cubic yards of concrete, 1,100 tons each of piping and structural steel, erection of 148 vessels and towers ranging in height up to 190 ft., using 1,400 tons of steel. Installations were 6 storage spheres, 3 boilers, a 3,000 ton refrigera- tion unit, 12 compressors, 198 pumps, 3 miles of underground pipe, 60 miles of conduit and 180 miles of electrical cables. Plant comprises administrative buildings, warehouse, utilities , tankage, separator systems, flare stacks, filter systems, a 2-1/2 mile long pipe band, roads, drainage and other necessary auxiliary work. This $29, 000, 000 plant will produce per annum 21, 000 tons of butadiene and 45, 000 tons of ethylene. Direct field labor expended in its construction amounted to approximately 2. 8 million man hours with a peak force of 1, 800 people. |
