Biographical/Historical Note This handmade garden claw was among tools owned by Ray R. Chugg (1890-1984). Early settlers made many of their own tools using a forge to heat metal, making it malleable enough to shape. Some farmers made their own forge enabling them to manufacture parts needed to keep their equipment in working order and create tools. The workpiece was transported to and from the forge using tongs which were also used to hold the workpiece on the anvil while shaping it with a hammer. The workpiece was transported to the slack tub where it rapidly cooled in a large body of water.
