Title Water Pump
Description The Farming Artifact category of the Harrisville Virtual History Museum contains farm implements and buildings.
Biographical/Historical Note Old well pumps use a system of walves and levers to move water up from a well underground. The handle on the outside of the pump operates a piston and valves inside the cylinder. These pumps often experienced loss of "prime" due to ingestion of air into the pump requireing pouring water into the top of the pump to replace air and restore "prime" in order to bring water up. This pump was used by Ray R. Chugg (1890-1984) to draw water for cattle on his farm in Harrisville. It has since been used to make a pation water fountain with an antique wash tub as the basin fitted with a small electrical pump to circulate the water.
