Show 34 THE CLASSICUM SHOP WORK J. W. Connell The Ogden High School offers courses in Mechanical Drawing and Woodwork as a part of the vocational program. Mechanical Drawing is studied as a universal graphic language and deals with the proper representations of lines, surfaces, conventions, sections, etc., which go to make up a working drawing. All information of size and shape, description notes and materials necessary for construction purposes is given in such drawings. Beginning Mechanical Drawing covers such work as free hand lettering; instrumental practices; drawing lines as to their different kinds and positions, lines as applied to surfaces, surfaces as applied to solids, and solids as applied to their position in a working drawing of an object. Such information as find¬ing centers of tangent arcs, practical geometrical constructions, technique of pencil and ink work, tracing and blue printing is considered. Advanced drawing gives instruction in more advanced working and detail drawings, sections, pictorial drawings, auxiliary projection, developments, intersections of solids, machine details, architectural details, and shop sketching. Any of the special divisions of drafting such as sheet metal, machine and architectural drawing may be taken up as a special study. The Wood Work Department at the school aims to check up on tools and tool processes necessary in construction as a continuation of junior high work. In addition to this indivirual bench work, group projects and machine work as applied to mill constructions of practical projects are studied in this department. A close correlation between preliminary shop drawings and sketches with construction work is maintained. To construct to advantage one must have in mind first the shape and size descriptions of the project at hand before beginning work in the shop. AUTO MECHANICS Varian E. Hale The course offered in auto mechanics is a very practical one. The first year's course is designed for the boy desiring to learn enough about the automobile to enable him to make his own minor repairs and adjust¬ments. The operation, care, and adjustments of vital parts and mechanism of the chassis and motor are taken up as follows: Gas engine, principles and opera¬tion; valve grinding; motor repair and bearing adjusting; selection of oils and proper lubrication; methods of locating and repairing common troubles in carburation, ignition, starting, and lighting. The second year's work is designed for the sturent desiring to make auto mechanics his life's work. This course should enable him to do all minor and major repairs on the family automobile and, with practice and experience, to qualify as a mechanic in garages. |
