"Let's read a right good exciting story," suggested Irene who was always looking for something out of the ordinary "to stimulate one's nerves," as she said. "Oh no, I'd rather not. Let's tell some experience we've had; something that has happened right in our own lives," said Grace. "Yes, lets," sang out most of the girls. "Well then, let's draw cuts and see who must begin. The one who gets the longest stick shall have to tell her's first," continued Grace. A laugh broke forth as Vie drew her's and found it to be the longest. "I'm glad its Vie because she's such a dandy story teller," said Irene as she settled herself to listen. "Has it got to be a real, true experience that I've had?" asked Vie. "Yes," chorused the girls. "Alright then, I've just thought of one. Well, two years ago next summer we were out in a little country town spending the vacation with some friends. About the middle of August, a berrying party was arranged by the ladies of the town. The whole village was stirred up as a small town generally is when anything unusual happens. "On the day appointed nearly everybody turned out with bedding and provisions enough to last for two days. "After a three hours drive, we reached the place where we were going to camp. It was about eleven o' clock. The sun was blazing hot and we were all glad to stop. "The place we chose was a beautiful miniture valley between two massive ridges of mountains. The river wound around through the middle of the tiny valley and pines grew quite thickly on both sides. On the west mountain where the pines were few, sarvice berries and |
