The long looked for appearance of our band has been made. The boys have had careful instruction and made a favorable impression. They played Shubert's Serenade, Golden Rod and America, and were heartily applauded. A new school song has been written by two members of the Faculty, entitled "Our W. S. A." Prof. Joseph Ballantyne has set to music the poem of Miss Jenette E. McKay. The song appears in this issue of the Acorn and will be taken up by the Academy choir at once. The advanced singing class has been organized with a membership of nearly forty pupils. The class meets twice a week at 8 a. m. A general review of all the fundi-mental principles has been taken up, and now practical sight singing in four parts is being done. The choir loft in the new building has been laid out. When completed it will be almost ideal in arrangement. Members of the choir will not only face the conductor but the audience as well. It will be a change much appreciated by all. To Our Departed Schoolmate William J. Wood By Edna M. Clegg, '99 Our dear friend has departed, While we tarry broken-hearted In the lines of duty; He has ended life's brief history, He has reached his home of glory. Over death victorious. Weep not. but with hearts more light, We will travel day and night To the rest that he has found, Are we not upon the river. Sailing fast, to meet forever, On more holy, happy ground? Ah, the way is shining clearer. As we journey ever nearer To the everlasting home, Friend who then awaits the landing, Comrade at the home now standing, We greet you, and we come.
