His deep chest rose and fell with rhythmical regularity as he breathed the fresh mountain air that blew in from the open window of the car. His thoughts, discontented with the speed of the train, leaped in a second a thousand miles of mountains and plains. He pictured a little home, vine-laden, sleeping in the shadows of the tall watchful sentinel-like trees as they swayed back and forth in the breeze. He saw the dim outline of a figure bending over and caressing the roses that grew by the old leaning1 gate. The moon shone full upon the gray hair and its silverness seemed a halo of divine light. His imagination centered upon this figure, his Mother. She started and looked up, and he saw the expression on her face change to one of joy, unspeakable joy, as she advanced, throwing open her arms. In another moment he was holding her in his own arms reverently, affectionately, looking down into her beaming, upturned face. He smiled and opened his eyes. The train was struggling slowly up the steep grade making many loops and turns. Hugh leaned forward and looked out of the window. He was awed at what he saw the wildness, the grandeur of 'the moon-lit canyon. Far below he could see the tops of tall pine trees. The road-bed had been blasted out of the solid rock on the steep side of the mountain, and as the cars moved slowly forward they seemed themselves to cling fearfully to the rails. There was not in the car a soul that gazed into that abyss but who thought of a wreck death. Hugh noticed the man in the seat ahead of him shudder and turn his eyes from the scene. "What a place for a wreck!" he muttered. "What a place for death!" Hugh commented. The other turned and smiled weakly. i "Deliver me from such! Do you know," he continued, "I may be a coward, but I always want to walk when I come to this place. Tonight. I do not feel right, I can think of nothing but death." |
