Show 18 THE ACORN gathered from Dr. Muller's statement: "If I am asked what impression our music makes upon the Japanese, I am sure I shall not be far wrong in saying that they find it far more detestable than we do theirs. A prominent Japanese said: 'Children, coolies and women may find pleasure in European music, but an educated Japanese can never tolerate it!'" Japanese instruments of music are simpler than ours; no complicated keyboards, valves, etc., being used. Many of them are very ancient, the koto being known to have existed for fifteen hundred years; this is a stringed instrument, often six feet long, with thirteen silk strings, and, of course only five notes in its scale. The sho is a wind instrument of seventeen pipes inserted in a wind chest. Among other instruments are flutes of various kinds. The samisen, a peculiarly female instrument, somewhat resembling our guitar, is played by striking the strings with a piece of ivory. In many things Japanese art has profoundly affected and influenced Western taste, but it may be safely stated that the golden art of music, as we understand it, has nothing to learn from the Land of the Sun's Origin. Selected. The third musicale was given on Wednesday, March 9, and was successful in every way. The work of the orchestra and Miss Myrtle Ballinger need special mention. Governor Spry attended the musicale and afterwards gave a very interesting address to the Student Body and patrons of the school. When you shake hands, grasp the hand as though you were glad to see the owner of it, not as though performing a perfunctory duty. Put your heart into your handshake. While you are holding the hand, look into the person's eyes and give him a smile from your heart. Let cordiality and geniality gleam in your very face. Success. The lucky man is the man who sees and grasps his opportunity. On the great clock of time there is but one word Now. "It is impossible," said a staff officer when Napoleon gave directions for a daring plan. "Impossible!" thundered the great commander, "impossible is the adjective of fools!" Napoleon went to the edge of his possibilities. THE ACORN 19 Athletics THE GYMNASIUM Do we want a gymnasium? Well, I should say we do. Watch us hold a dancing class and at the same time train our team to beat Heber and you will say we need a gym. Follow the "breachy" ones for just one day and then answer how best we can direct that natural energy now going to waste. In fact there is not a boy or girl in school or out that will not benefit by a gym. A gymnasium such as we need is a place where those desirous of so doing may spend their hours in healthful, pleasant, elevating exercises, and where those who have not yet that desire to work off their energy, may go and learn a higher purpose in physical culture. The Academy needs such a place; the Ogden people likewise. The student that takes physical exercise in school can prepare his lesson in less time and can get a clearer understanding of it than one who does not; for it is in harmony with physiological law that to have perfect health one must have exercise. No boy ever cultivated an evil thought while playing a manly game honestly. The best way to get rid of the loafers is to make them workers. Give them a gym and watch them work. The beneficial effect of this working spirit will be felt in our city and in the cities here represented by reason of the part played by each young man. Principal McKendrick says: "Before snow flies the gymnasium will be a reality." Where it is to come from is not well known, but there are several moves on foot that must culminate in our gymnasium. The Sixth Ward Parents class, that of North Ogden, and other wards have plans for important actions; the school board of the Academy, assisted by the mutual organizations of three stakes are in the action, and their co-operation with us and the interests of our friends and patrons means that our fond hopes are to be realized and our efforts will be rewarded in having a magnificent building grace the space behind our Academy.
