Show SCHOOL NOTES Assembly Happenings Apostle D. O. McKay visited us early in the year and talked on "Sticktoitiveness" and "Loyalty to Our Ideals." His talk was very interesting and the students felt that their time was well spent. We always enjoy the visits of members of our Board and extend to them a hearty invitation to come often. On September 28, Miss Roumania Hyde, who is instructor in violin work in the Academy, rendered a number of selections on the violin, which everyone enjoyed. Patriarch Larkin and Bishop Jones each gave a short talk. In devotional, October 8, Mrs. Pardoe gave a very pleasing and entertaining rendition entitled, "War Brides." Ralph Parlette, the first number on the Academy Lecture Course, spoke to the student sin a general assembly. His subject was "Hunting the Thimble." Dr. Widsoe, of the Agricultural College, gave a very instructive and interesting talk on his trip to California. He told of Charles Christadora, the California Shut In, and Father Serri, the founder of California. The devotional hour on October 15 was taken up by the Danish Club, who entertained with musical selections, both vocal and instrumental, and also several readings. The program was ably rendered and all students and visitors present felt that they had been well paid for attending. On October 22, Superintendent Cummings was a visitor at our school. During the devotional period he gave a short talk to the students in which he expressed his pleasure at seeing the large attendance and the spirit which the Student Body had manifested so far this year. Superintendent Cummings visited the various classes during the day in order to see the work of the students and teachers. Professor Nichols and family have furnished music for our devotional period twice this year. The selections were very ably rendered by the talented group and the students received a treat from them. This year, a double quartette was organized, which consists of some of the best talent in the school. They have favored us thus far with many pleasing numbers and it is hoped that they will continue in the good work. ACORN 16 The Faculty Reception The first dance of the year was given by the Faculty with the students and their friends as guests. The dance was for a "get acquainted" party as well as for an entertainment for the students. Most of the students were present and many of their friends, and all declared the reception a great success. The Senior Dance The Seniors gave a very successful Hallowe'en dancing party on October 29th. The hall was attractively decorated with corn shocks and pumpkins. Refreshments were served in two booths, one of which was decorated in Chinese fashion and the other represented a rustic tea garden. Everyone had a good time and proclaimed the Seniors royal entertainers. The Lecture Course The Lecture Course is offering only five numbers, but all are superior in quality to many of the ones presented in the past. The first number on the course was Ralph Parlette. He entertained a large crowd with his talk on "The University of Hard Knocks." The next number on the course is the Cavalier Opera Company, which will present a musical program on November 26th. All are looking forward to this number and all expect a treat. It is not probable that they will be disappointed. The Lecture Course this year consists of the following numbers: Ralph Parlette Oct. 7. Cavalier Opera Singers Nov. 26. Albert Wiggam Dec. 2. Servant in the House Feb. Moroni Olsen March 3. Our Holiday Friday afternoon, October 8th, was declared a holiday and all the merry students adjourned to the park where sports of different kinds were participated in. Some of the boys who participated in the sack rush, tug-of-war and water contests, received damaged faces or a good drenching, but they smiled on and the girls did all in their power to keep them in good humor, by serving them a most enticing campus lunch. Those who felt as though they hadn't had quite enough to eat after the lunch, participated in a "bun contest," in which they received a molasses covered bun free of charge.
