Show Utah Construction joined with the Los Angeles-based Cyprus Mines Corporation in developing not only the Marcona Mine, but also a stable workforce in an area previously innocent of industry. The company built housing, a hospital, and schools. It strictly rationed water and later installed a sea water distillation plant before discovering underground water 40 miles away. By 1954, the company had devised an elaborate dust collecting system, which was installed to give greater protection to workers and equipment near the crushing operations. |
