Show Chemistry Courses in Chemistry will be organized to meet the needs of Evening School students. Chemistry 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 11, as listed in the college catalogue will be listed as the need arises. Chorus and Voice This course is essentially designed to develop the correct use of the voice and good repertoire. Effort is continually being expanded to improve tone quality and to increase the range of the voice through vocal exercises in ensemble. Songs are studied, as a class, to develop a working knowledge of correct tone production, phrasing diction, deep breathing and proper breath support. This class work is supplemented by individual study of selected songs. As much individual attention is given as time will permit. Instruction is given in. the development of tone that is free, resonant, and sustained, by spontaneous automatic breathing. Good diction is taught through minute study of vowels and consonants. A legato style of singing is accomplished by instruction in careful phrasing and intelligent interpretation of song. Commercial Art Instruction includes both practical laboratory projects and related theory required to develop the skills and knowledges of a commercial artist. Development of the fundamental skills in design, color, composition, display advertising, lettering, layout methods of reproduction, illustration, and others are stressed. English 1. Composition and Rhetoric A study of words, the sentence, and the paragraph. Grammar and syntax are emphasized. This course is designed to develop a background of information concerning English fundamentals so that students can go forward with a program of effective writing. English 2. Exposition and Argumentation This course is designed to give the student a working knowledge of two forms of discourse, exposition and argumentation. Various forms of exposition are treated in detail: The process, criticism, definition, and biography. Emphasis is placed upon developing a technique of gathering facts and assembling them into an effective whole. English 11. Vocabulary Building The object of this course is to increase the breadth and appropriateness of the vocabulary with special reference to speech and reading. Attention is given to prefixes, suffixes, roots, derivations, and particular errors of common vocabulary. English 29. Creative Writing An introduction to the literature of short fiction, and some attention to publication are taken up in this course. Beginners in fiction writings are instructed in the finding andr development of material and in the elements of fiction writing. Students who have had at least one story published receive instructions in the problems of marketing:. 8 English 6. Commercial Journalism The object of this course is to start prospective writers on the road to sales. The subjects include newspaper features, newspaper serials, and short stories, trade journal articles, magazine articles and short features. Each member receives individual criticism and advice. EnglishWriters Workshop Students bring writing projects and problems for group discussion, investigate the requirements of various markets for fiction, and submit written lessons dealing with different types and aspects of fiction, including criticism of complete stories. French 1. Elementary French A beginning course in the language, stressing correct pronunciation, the ability to read fluently, and to speak and understand the language of every day life. Drill in the elements of grammar, practice in writing French, and the reading of modern stories and plays, will be part of the course. FrenchConversational A course emphasizing conversational fluency with some grammatical study. Especially designed for those intending to travel and for interpreters. Ground School Day extension classes will be arranged for regular day students filling out their courses with flight training. Confer with H. Paul Huish. Heredity and Eugenics Facts and principles of heredity as developed from the study of plants and animals. The course is designed to teach the principles underlying reproduction and transmission of characteristics from generation to generation and their application to life in general. The following topics will be treated: The structure of cells and heredity importance; Mendelian laws; genes and chromosomes; plant breeding; animal breeding; eugenics; human heredity and applications of heredity to human welfare, evolution. Lectures and demonstrations, movies, slides and charts. History 5. Modern and Contemporary European History This course is an intensive study of the origin of present-day European problems. The political, social, and intellectual currents resulting from the industrialization of the continental countries, international diplomacy 1815-1946, the military and diplomatic aspects of the Great War, the Paris peace conference and the problems of the new European states since 1918. The rise of totalitarian movements, the Second World War and its aftermath. 9 |
