Our only objections in the past to such usage were that (1) it might have offended our good friend, Mr. Saive, and (2) that it might have had an effect on our rights to the use of this name in connection with guns in the United States. As regards No, l, you said in New York that this would not be a matter of any seriousness or concern. As for No. 2, there would have to be some justification for the use of the name in (a) mechanical make up of the gun and/or (b) its presentation to the United States military authorities. As for (a), there are mechanical features (for example, the extractor among Others) which can fairly be said to be originally Browning design, and as for (b), it is certainly true that I intervened at the outset with the Ordnance Department in order to get the carbine properly introduced and started over here, Therefore, the name Browning could properly be used in con nection with the gun.
