Show The building of the Hoover Dam required more than 5,000 workers and over $54.8 million in capital costs. More than 50 tunnels and shafts were dug during the preliminary work and the actual construction of the dam. By impounding Lake Mead, the dam finally brought flood control to the Colorado River and hydro-electric power to southwestern states. The dam was named for President Herbert Hoover, a successful mining engineer before he entered politics. As shown, Hoover visited the dam site, in November 1932, shortly after losing his bid for re-election. As the Great Depression eroded Hoover's popularity, the project was renamed the Boulder Dam, but the first and official name was restored in 1947. |
