Show Daringly Plans Subs Polar Trip Theme For Dinner Captain Sir Hubert Wilkins, famed polar explorer, will tell of his plans for an Arctic submarine trip at the next dinner of the Bonneville club, to be held the evening of December 1 at the Hotel Utah, it was announced Saturday. Captain Wilkins plans to make his trip in July, and the United States navy has made arrangements by which he will be able to obtain one of Uncles Sams undersea boats. He believes that a submarine could enter the north polar sea when the ice is broken up, a period at which no explorer on foot could enter the region. For this reason, Captain Wilkins is confident that he could make studies of meteorological and oceanographic significance such as could not be made by airplane or dirigible. Captain Wilkins has led a life of unusual adventure. He began his exciting career by taking motion pictures in the front fighting lines during the Balkan wars. He flew an airplane as early as 1910, and was the first man in the world to take moving pictures of an actual battle from an airplane. The explorer has five firsts to his credit He made the first transpolar flight by airplane. He made the first airplane landing on floating polar ice. He was the first to make a long trip ashore unaided after a forced landing on floating ice. He made the first airplane flight in the Antarctic on November 18, 1928. He was the first to discover new land from an airplane. |
