Show Nov 1930 OGDEN 20 Years Ago From Our Files. MEXICO has a revolution almost beyond control. Uprisings are reported from a great part of the republic, with troops rushing in all directions. Three towns have been captured by the revolutionists armed with long distance guns. Wireless messages are said to have been heard at a distance of 3889 miles, between Key West, Fla., and Norfolk, Va. It is the longest airword communication ever before known. The Democratic representatives in the next house of congress will be 227 against 163 Republicans and one Socialist. This gives the Democrats a majority of 63 and a plurality of 64. Complete count of the recent election shows a landslide for the Democratic party in the nation. Count Leo Tolstoi is dead. His body will be buried under Poverty Rock in the spot where, in his childhood, he buried a green rocking horse. The burial will be in the accordance with his written request. Thousands are at the funeral today at Zaseika, Russia. Sanford Bingham, one of Weber countys prominent citizens and staunch pioneers, died at his home in Riverdale this morning at the ripe old age of 89 years. A fire broke out at the beautiful new residence of Dr. A.S. Condon, 2731 Monroe avenue, last night, causing damage of about 500. The home is just being completed. The fire was caused by a carpenter leaving fire in the grate. Correspondence from Fred J. Kiesel now at Baden Baden, Germany, urges arrangements to have either the Ogden or Salt Lake choir sing at the American Land and irrigation exposition in New York next year. A. R. Heywood, president of the Weber club, received the letter yesterday. A special coach of Mormon converts from Europe arrived in Ogden this morning over the Union Pacific railroad. They will take up residences in Ogden and Salt Lake. Domestic art has been introduced in the Ogden High school with Miss Lillian Royce as instructor. The course will embrace all kinds of common sewing and also fancy work. A campaign for water main extensions in the city has been started by the city administration, the first extension to be on Twelfth street, east of Washington avenue to number 987. West Ogden and Wall avenue extensions are being given close consideration. Posts for cluster electric lights have arrived and will be installed in a few days. It is claimed that when the lights are in force it will be possible to read a newspaper at night by the artificial light. These lights are to be placed on Hudson avenue between Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth streets. County Commissioner Frank Moore raises the question whether the county is now paying too much for water service at the courthouse. He says it is costing 50 a month and he is of the opinion that it is too much. Wind on the Great Salt lake last night blew at a velocity of 50 or more miles an hour. No damage to the big trestle on the railroad crossing the lake has been reported. |
