January 24- South Central Chile devastated by earthquakes; thousands died. February 10- Pope pius XI died at 81. February 25- Tammany Leader James J. Hines convicted of lottery conspiracy. March 2- Eugenio Cardinal Pacelli, Vatican secretary of state, elected pope, took name Pius XII. March 14- Hitler dissolved Czechoslovak republic; Bohemia-Morayia made reich protectorate. March 22- Germany absorbed Memel. March 29- Madrid fell; rebels hailed end of Spanish war. March 31- Britain pledged full military support to Poland against aggression by Germany. April 7- Italy invaded Albania. April 15- President Roosevelt asked Mussolini and Hitler for 10-year peace guaranty. April 17- Supreme court upheld the new agricultural adjustment act. April 26- Britain announced conscription. April 28- Hitler spurned Roosevelt peace plea; denounced Polish-German nonaggression pact and Anglo-German naval treaty. September 1- Germany invaded Poland. September 1- President Rosevelt pledged himself to keep America out of war. September 3- Britain and France announced they were at war with Germany, British liner Athenia sunk with loss of 142 lives. September 17- Russia invaded Poland; British aircraft carrier Courageous sunk with loss of 515 lives. September 21- Congress convened in special session. September 27- Warsaw surrendered. September 29- Russia and Germany divide Poland. October 2- George Cardinal Mundelein, archbishop of Chicago, died at 67. October 8- New York Yankees won fourth successive world series. October 19- Turkey signed military alliance with allies. November 3- Special session of congress adjourned after repealing arms embargo. November 4- Norway released U. S. November 8- Hitler escaped bomb explosion at Munich Nazi shrine. November 16 Alphonse (Scarface Al) Capone Freed. November 21 Allies clamped embargo on German exports. November 29- Russia severed diplomatic relations with Finland. November 29 Fritz Kuhn, leader of German- American bund, convicted of grand larceny and forgery. November 30 Russia invaded Finland by land, sea and air. December 13 British warships engaged Admiral Graf Spee off Uruguay; Germans lost 36 dead; British 72. December 14 Russia dropped from League of Nations. December 17 Admiral Graf Spee blown up off Montevideo by own crew. December 19 German liner Columbus, 32,581 tons, scuttled 450 miles off New Jersey coast. December 20 Captain Hans Langsdorff, commander of Admiral Graf Spee, committed suicide.
