Show Wahlquist Band Editor, Standard-Examiner: - Upon reading in another col umn of last Monday’s Standard about the terrifi Examiner concert presented in Ogden by the U.S, Navy Band, I felt that I had to tell you about a truly inspiring musical program I attended last Thursday evening. However, it wasn’t presented by a professional group which trav- els all over the country giving these performances and as far as I know they have never charged a cent admission. | am speaking of the performance that took place at Wahiquist | Junior High School at their Fine Arts program. ‘These youngsters are from 7th, 8th, and 9th grades and dothis as part of their school ‘curriculum. But they were noth-_ ing short of magnificent!! Those . of you who attended know what | I am talking about and those who didn’t cannot begin to real-— jze what an effect a group of junior high students could have i on an audience. The finale, which brought the audience entire their to feet, consisted of a band and four different vocal groups (approximately 300 youngsters) with the rendition of Battle Hymn of the Republic. It took a lot of work, practice, patience and I’m sure even a little prayer to execute the difficult timing to the split second for these vocal groups | band to coincide as they oe . dil . : The concert choir and a singing group of girls, The Melodettes, have had public appearances for the past three months and will continue until school is. out. The Eagle Band recently took high honors in competition with other Junior High bands of this area. | a ae ‘Recently at a Sunday program, at the 57th Ward den City, in Og- of upon completion the performance, a speaker told | | 1 the vocal groups to “do one thing for me. Go home and tell | your parents ‘:Thank you’.” lm sure that all the parents, teachers and students of Wahlquist Junior High School would like to do exactly that—say ‘Thank you” to these students who voluntarily put forth all the effort it takes to come up with such a fine musical program and especially to the teachers who have made our youngsters realize that anything worth doing is worth doing right.
