Show THE CLASSICUM 35 HISTORY David Wangsgard To graduate from the Ogden High School a student must complete two years of history, one of which is United States History and Civics. If you have had one year of history in the ninth or the tenth grade, you must take United States History and Civics in your senior year. For the benefit of a few students who did not take any history in junior high, a course in general history is offered during the junior year in high school. In addition to the required subjects in history there are three electives in social science: sociology, economics, and commercial law. In this day of changing standards, trade barriers, economic adjustments, and ever-increasing legal disputes and entanglements, a study of these subjects is highly recommended as being interesting and very profitable. MATHEMATICS C. L. Coray Every junior high school student who has followed the outlined course of study comes to High School with a year of algebra and a year of geometry. A second year of algebra, a half year of solid geometry, and a half year of trigonometry are offered in High School. These courses are principally for those students who intend to work at engineering or some related profession and find mathematics required, and for those who choose to include more mathematics as an elective in some other course. More and more students are taking additional work in mathematics, not only to better qualify for college entrance, but to qualify for intelligent living. Young people who do not intend to be engineers are taking mathematics in increasing numbers because they realize that every year, almost every day, the world of men leans more heavily on scientists. The alphabet of science is mathematics. To take an intelligent interest in science, whether for pleasure or profit; to understand a little the nature of the earth and the universe about it; to keep in step with the progress and change in the way of living that science is producing; and to take a hand in those new achieve¬ments of science, aviation and radio, mathematical training is urgently needed. COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT William Abplanalp The Commercial Department offers two courses—Bookkeeping and Stenographic. The aim of the first is to prepare students for accounting and other administrative positions and is especially arranged to meet the needs of local business conditions. The aim of the second course is to fit the student for general and private office work as stenographers and typists. |
