Show WELCOME TO UTAH! Utah! It's an exciting place to be, and there are many sites and events within an hour's drive of Weber State College. Temple Square, located in Salt Lake City, is probably Utah's leading tourist attraction. Besides the Mormon temple and two visitors centers, Temple Square includes the historic tabernacle. This is the building in which the world renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir performs often. The arts are well recognized in Utah. The new Symphony Hall in Salt Lake City houses many musical performances. Utah's own Utah Symphony Orchestra performs here several times throughout the yer. Other artists, some internationally recognized, also perform at the Symphony Hall at various times during the year. One can find many sources of live theatrical entertainment in Utah. Broadway touring companies have performed such well-known musicals as "A Chorus Line" and "Annie" at Salt Lake City's Capitol Theatre. Two other theatres in Salt Lake City, providing many types of dramatic entertainment, are the Promised Valley Playhouse and the Pioneer Memorial Theatre. Weber State College's own Browning Arts Center also houses the performances of many plays and musicals. Dancing plays a big role in the arts in Utah. Ballet West is a nationally recognized ballet company. Among other performances, Ballet West produces "The Nutcracker" each year for the Christmas holiday season. The Reperatory Dance Theatre is a modern dance company which performs various types of modern dance yearly. The "Greatest Show on Earth" can be found in Utah within an approximate hour's drive from Weber State College. Located in mountains just north and east of the Weber State campus are three ski resorts - Powder Mountain, Nordic Valley, and Snow Basin. Each of these resorts are equipped with several runs for the beginner to expert skier. Ski resorts such as Park City and Snowbird are located east of Salt Lake City. Park City is more than a ski resort in the winters; it's an old mining town! Many historical sites can be found in Park City, along with some exciting things to do. Utah is known not only for snow skiing, but for waterskiing as well. Located fairly close to Weber State College, Pineview Reservoir and Willard Bay attract many boaters and water-skiers during the summer months. Other sports also receive recognition in Utah. Utah has a professional basketball, hockey, and baseball team. Many hockey and basketball games are played in the Salt Palace located in Salt Lake City. This spacious building houses many fans of Utah teams. Conventions, concerts, and demonstrations also take place in the Salt Palace. Historical sites in Utah bring in thousands of tourists each year. The Miles Goodyear Cabin located in Ogden is the oldest house in Utah. This house can be seen near the Ogden LDS. Temple. Located in Promontory, Utah (near Ogden) one can view the Golden Spike Monument, the place where the railroad spike was driven to connect railroad travel from the eastern United States to the West. In Ogden, one can visit an national historic site. Union Station, where many trains came through Utah in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Trolley Square, in Salt Lake City, is in an unusual way, a historic site. The old trolley station has been renovated into a shopping plaza. Many of the trolley cars serve as seating areas in restaurants. I LOVE UTAH For shoppers, Trolley Square is not by far, the only place to shop in Utah. Salt Lake City includes two very nice shopping malls: the Crossroads Plaza and the Z.C.M.I. Center. Just minutes from the Weber State campus are the new Ogden City and Newgate Malls. One can also find amusement areas in Utah. Lagoon, an amusement park, is located approximately 20 minutes from Weber State College. Perhaps one of Utah's leading amusement areas is the Great Salt Lake, where one can actually float because of the extremely high salt content of the lake. When students decide to go to Weber State College, they can find the arts, sports, history, and much more, practically in their own backyards. |
