McKay was unanimously elected to become principal of the Weber Academy at an annual salary of 1500. The Weber Stake Board of Education in making this appointment had a long acquaintance with Principal McKay and his family. David O. McKay was born in Huntsville in 1873 and had served as principal of the Huntsville School in 1893 after attending the Weber Stake Academy. McKay graduated from the University of Utah in 1897 having completed the Normal School course and participating in athletics as a member of the football team, and he taught at Weber Academy from 1897 to 1902. McKay guided the Weber Academy for six years (1902-1908) and when he resigned as principal in 1908 he uniquely held the position of Principal of the Academy as well as president of the Academy Board of Education. His appointment as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve in April of 1906 led to his resignation as principal, but during his lifetime Weber occupied a special place in his heart and because of his position as a church authority received special attention. The Weber Academy fared well in monies appropriated from the Church for the 1902-1903 school year (note table). Even so, the Academy was still in debt and on March 25,1903, Principal McKay presented the financial case of the Academy before the General Church Board of Education and received an additional 1,821.80 to cover deficits. Principal McKay was already having an important influence with the Church Board of Education.
