Biographical/Historical Note Seed drills distribute seeds into the ground, positioning them at equal distances and at the proper depth, then covers them in soil. Ray R. Chugg converted this particular drill from horse-drawn to tractor-pulled. This drill was used through the 1970s, by Lorin Crowther (1916-1992), who used it to plant alfalfa. Ben Junior Maxfield was the last to use the drill in 1979.
