Weber Stake Academy first opened its doors for instruction at the LDS Second Ward Meeting House on the corner of 26th Street and Grant Avenue on January 7, 1889. The academy's two teachers, Louis F. Moench and Edwin Cutler, welcomed nearly one hundred students on the first day, and, by the end of its first term, 195 students in all had registered for the school. This monograph depicts the role the LDS church and its leaders played in founding the school, the background of its first educators and administrators and the financial challenges they confronted in operating the school from 1889 through 1894. Letters of appreciation for Louis F. Moench and a bibliography of primary sources are also provided. |

Show 16 in the monthly fast meetings. Young Men's and Young Ladies' Mutual Improvement Associations were organized in which young people took part and over which they presided. A Primary Association was organized in which the youngest children were instructed in religious principles. Picnics and dancing parties were encouraged. Bobsleigh parties went to Huntsville, and excursions to the resorts on Great Salt Lake. Debates were endulged in, the first being on March 16, 1889. The question was: "Resolved that the education of the sexes should be equal." The affirmative debaters were Grant Geddes, Janie West, and Grace McKay, and the negative side was represented by George Hall, Enoch Farr, Jr. and Homer Dewey. "The building was packed, and the affirmative carried off the palm." The first ball of the Weber Stake Academy was held in the Woodmansee Hall, Professor Moench taking an active Part in making students happy. (This hall was on the east side of Washington Boulevard, upstairs and a short distance south of 24th Street.) |
