Weber Stake Academy first opened its doors for instruction at the LDS Second Ward Meeting House on the corner of 26th Street and Grant Avenue on January 7, 1889. The academy's two teachers, Louis F. Moench and Edwin Cutler, welcomed nearly one hundred students on the first day, and, by the end of its first term, 195 students in all had registered for the school. This monograph depicts the role the LDS church and its leaders played in founding the school, the background of its first educators and administrators and the financial challenges they confronted in operating the school from 1889 through 1894. Letters of appreciation for Louis F. Moench and a bibliography of primary sources are also provided. |

Show 62 LETTERS OF APPRECIATION Culver City, California May 20, 1951 Dear Brother Kerr: In regards to Br. Louis F. Moench, yes, I remember him and liked him the best of all the Missionaries I came in contact with in Germany. I was a missionary myself from 1882 - 1884 and I met him soon after. He treated me like a father, like in D. & Cov. 4 6; faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, justice, brotherly kindness, godliness, charity, himility and intelligence. He ate dinner many times at my mother's table. Br. Moench was well educatad and schooled when I met him again in Salt Lake City. In about 1888 I was married and had our first child. He said then smiling, "that was a good beginning of getting a family." I worked for over fifty-one years for the Deseret News. I carry a gold pin for that service. I also got a pension. I remain your brother G. Adolph Brox. |
