Show 28 Chapter VIII Preparations were necessary and the engagement of teachers vital for the academic school year, 1889-90, so Louis F. Moench and Joseph Stanford "were appointed a committee to engage teachers and to prepare for the publication of a circular. Accordingly, they went to work."1 On July 10, 1889, Professor Moench "began in earnest." He contacted by letter Oscar Vance and Celestia Nash, former pupils of Karl G. Maeser. William Fife was engaged to teach architectural drawing: Daniel Hamer, Phonography; Professor L. D. Edwards, Vocal Music; Carrie Canfield, Ladies' work; and Grant Geddes, Lauritz Peterson, Aggie Herrick, and Janie West, assistants. Also for lecturers for the Polysophical Society, Joseph Stanford, Joseph West, C. C. Richards, Henry Rolapp, Joseph Parry, Dr. Shipp (Bardella), and Dr. Allen (J. X.). All seemed willing to take hold. By the 24th of July the circular was ready, except the names of two or three teachers.2 The Board of Trustees met on August 1 and approved the annual with few changes. It was the sense of the meeting that we confer with a gentleman from Salt Lake City to take charge of the musical department, also to confer with Dr. Ramseyer. School was to open the 19th of August.3 Trustees, Nils C. Flygare, Joseph Stanford, and Professor Moench, met Anton Peterson on August 6th at the Court House, "We agreed to pay him $40 per month to teach four hours a week,"4 L. D. Edwards for some reason was not employed to teach in the Academy. Anton Peterson, however, after an explanation of what was expected of a church school teacher, accepted the offer. The Weber Stake Academy was most furtunate in obtaining the services of this highly gifted and polished musician. The proof of the annual was read in early August, 1889, and on the 10th of this month "circulars were sent to all parts of Weber County, and on August 11th "were distributed among members of all the Sunday Schools."6 1.
