Weber Stake Academy first opened its doors for instruction at the LDS Second Ward Meeting House on the corner of 26th Street and Grant Avenue on January 7, 1889. The academy's two teachers, Louis F. Moench and Edwin Cutler, welcomed nearly one hundred students on the first day, and, by the end of its first term, 195 students in all had registered for the school. This monograph depicts the role the LDS church and its leaders played in founding the school, the background of its first educators and administrators and the financial challenges they confronted in operating the school from 1889 through 1894. Letters of appreciation for Louis F. Moench and a bibliography of primary sources are also provided. |

Show 17 Chapter V Lorenzo Snow organized a Polysophical Society in Salt Lake City in 1854, which was very successful. Like organizations were established in many L. D. 3. Church schools. The Society at the Weber Stake Academy was begun on February 17, 1889 and became a great cultural influence to the school as well as to the community of Ogden. The programmes were high class and were partly designed to give the students an opportunity to present to the public such items as they had learned during the weekly attendance at the academy.1 The students' contributions were literary and musical. A lecture by a prominent citizen of the city added greatly to the evening's entertainment. The meetings were held every Friday evening and The Daily and Semi-Weekly Standard featured the programmes in their write-ups.
