Show 10 WEBER ACADEMY The principles of the Gospel are systematically studied from the standard works of the Church, with a view of creating faith in the minds of the students, and a sense of moral responsibility in all their associations and duties. By application to the principal, students who are non-members of the Church may be excused from studying theology. In addition to the regular prescribed courses in theoloy, the Academy offers all the regular courses prescribed by the High School curriculum; and these are so arraned as to prepare the student for advanced work in the higher institutions of learning. Buildings. The Academy is located on Jefferson avenue, between Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth streets, opposite Lester park. The original building is two stories in height. The rooms are large and well lighted, and are provided with steam heat and electric lights and all the other necessary appliances. The first floor is occupied by the Domestic Arts and the Domestic Science departments; the second by the Library, the Study Hall, Physical Laboratory, Typewriting Room and Athletic Room. The new building is a beautiful brick structure joining the old building on the west. It is seventy-six feet wide by one hundred five feet in length, with two stories and a basement. On the first floor is located the principal's office, waiting room, commercial department and six class rooms, the largest of which is twenty-eight by forty feet and the smallest eighteen by twenty-two. The basement contains the Manual Training rooms and the Zoology, Botany and Chemistry laboratories, the Band room and the "Acorn" room. The second floor is occupied by three class rooms, and the large lecture hall with a seating capacity of fifteen hundred. WEBER ACADEMY 11 Library. The library is a neatly furnished and well-lighted room adjoining the large study hall and reading room. The shelves contain valuable books on theology, literature, science, history, mathematics, pedagogy, physiology and some rare books on American archaeology. Recently many excellent additions have been made, both by contribution and purchase. The books are accessioned and shelf-listed, according to the Dewey system, and an efficient librarian is in charge. The large study hall and reading room is furnished with tables sufficient to accommodate two hundred students; the department is supplied with everything that goes to make a good working library. Equipment. Chemistry. The chemical laboratory occupies a large, well-ventilated room on first floor of new building, and is thoroughly equipped for experimental work in general chemistry. Large double desks are provided, each of which has adequate drawer and shelf space, and an entire set of apparatus and reagent bottles. One gas connection with a Bunsen burner is conveniently arranged for the use of each student at his desk. Sinks and water connections are also supplied. Two chemical balances with weights of precision are among the more costly apparatus. The department has at its disposal a stock of glass tubing, beakers, test tubes, porcelain ware, laboratory hardware and a complete supply of chemicals. Any broken apparatus can be replaced at once on written application, so that all delay on account of breakage is avoided |
