Show 40 WEBER COLLEGE - OGDEN, UTAH Intramural Athletics are provided for the mass of students. Intramural athletics are provided for the mass of students. Competition is organized in a large variety of sports so that all members of the student body may compete in activities of their choice. The program is planned for the various groups on the campus as well as for all unaffiliated students. Two awards are given: a cup for the organized group massing the greatest number of points during the year and a medal for the individual massing the greatest number of points during the year. The program is largely in the hands of student managers and directors under the supervision of the Physical Education Department. Intramural sports are organized in the belief that the following purposes of the program serve the vital interests of young people: (1) recreation, (2) social contacts, (3) group sport, (4) health, and (5) permanent interest in sports. The Women's Athletic Association develops student enthusiasm for recreational activity through sports. The aim of the Women's Athletic Association is to develop enthusiasm for recreational activity through sports with socially desirable qualifications, to encourage the spirit of service to the College, and to promote sportsmanship, leadership, and friendliness. The slogan of the organization is: "A sport for every girl, and a girl for every sport." Through its intramural program it provides student leadership, spontaneous and organized play, and recreation for the women students of the College. The intramural program is divided into two sections; club contests and tournaments. The club organizations which function continually throughout the year are: swimming, dancing, pingpong, fencing and riding. The three main tournaments of the year are: tennis, basketball, and volleyball. Membership is open to any woman in the College who desires to participate in sports. WEBER COLLEGE - OGDEN, UTAH 41 Awards The Award System stimulates extracurricular activity and honors meritorious students. In order to stimulate extracurricular activity in the College and to compensate the students in some manner for such activity, a system of awards has been developed by the Associated Students of Weber College. Awards are based on personal competition for participation privileges in the following: football, basketball, track, wrestling, swimming, tennis, fencing, golf, music, drama, oratory, extempore, debating, Acorn, Scribulus, Signpost; student body president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, committee members; intra-mural manager (of women and of men); officers of the Associated. Women Students, Associated Men Students, Women's Athletic Association; class presidents, and presidents of all clubs. Awards are in the form of medals for sophomores and certificates for freshmen. Recipients of awards are eligible for membership in the Weber Club, an honorary organization. Higher awards are given to the members of the Orion Club, composed of the ten to fifteen outstanding students in the sophomore class. Community Activities Community contributions and services aid the educational program. The demand for a state junior college in 1933 did not need to be created; it already existed. From the day of its charter, the communities of the Weber College area have been loyal to the school. This loyalty has taken the form of definite support to, and aid for, the educational program. Some of the most important community services are: 1. Part time work that makes it possible for one-fourth of the students to earn while they learn. 2. Advisory committees consisting of union men, artisans and employers in each field, who sponsor the vocational courses, counsel with the teachers, and promote the advancement and placement of students. 3. Organized bodies like the Ogden Chamber of Commerce Committee for Weber College, its committee on the Guidance and Placement of Youth, the educational committees of the various civic, social and literary clubs, and the Utah Employment Service. 4. The cooperation of the superintendents and high school principals and teachers who actively promote articulation between the high schools and the College. 5. Scholarships, loan funds, and trophies contributed by citizens. 6. Ample opportunity for student expression through the drama, the opera, the chorus and orchestra, skits, readings, the dance; and for student participation in community enterprises. 7. The Ogden Community-Weber College Concert Series and Weber College Lyceum Course. |
