Propagation and care of ornamental plants in seed beds, cold frames, lath houses and nursery; lining out and planting nursery stock; seed collection, propagation and nursery care; digging, balling, canning, assembling, and packing nursery stock; nursery sales; field trips to nurseries. Three quarter hours. Spring. Staff 97. Plant Materials. Classification, identification, requirements and uses of both woody and herbaceous plants for landscape purposes. Both native and introduced plant studies. Prerequisites: Botany 1 or 2. Three quarter hours. Summer. Staff COURSES OF INSTRUCTION Farm Mechanics 51. Farm Woodwork. A course designed to give farmers training in the use of power equipment in building furniture, farm instructions on feeders, coops, hog houses, gates, doors, etc. Two to five quarter hours. Autumn. Staff 52. Farm Woodwork and Building. A program planned in cooperation with farmer advisory group to help the farmers solve their building repairs and through actual work the farmers get a knowledge of the mechanics of building construction. Two to five quarter hours. Autumn, Spring, Summer. Staff 56. Rural Electrification. A program designed to give farmers training in house wiring for lights, wiring barn and farm light plant. Wiring of door bells. Gives such information as to safety precautions and teaches such skills as are necessary to complete the job. Two to five quarter hours. Autumn, Spring, Summer. Staff 58. Welding. Training is given in setting up apparatus; learning proper flame for welding; learning manipulation of rod and torch for simple welding jobs as they apply to minor repair jobs on any of the many kinds of modern farm machinery. Welding with the arc taught in manipulation of the electrode in welding simple jobs. Two quarter hours. Autumn, Winter, Spring. Staff 59. Farm Metal Work. Heating, bending, shaping, and tempering of metal as well as sharpening plowshares, cultivating equipment, welding arc and acetylene bending and twisting cold metal. All skills are taught as they apply to farm work. Two quarter hours. Autumn, Spring. Staff 61. Concrete Form Construction. Construction and design of forms, figuring quantities of materials required as they apply to floors in farm buildings, concrete walks, feeding floors, yard pavements, footings, foundations and basement walks. Cement finishing will be treated as it applies to driveways, bridges, water gates, tanks, posts, etc. Two to five quarter hours. Summer. 63. Farm Improvements and Structure. A course designed to help with the construction or irrigating equipment, side walks, hard surfacing of feed areas, construction of fences and feed mangers. Two to five quarter hours. Autumn, Spring. Staff 67. Farm Machine and Repair. A program designed to give the farmer experience in repairing the various types of farm machinery and to help him develop the skills related to repair work. Two to five quarter hours. Autumn, Winter. Staff 68. Advanced Farm Machinery Repair. Examination, disassembly replacement and repair of parts on any of the many kinds of modern farm machinery including welding, forging, drilling and machining of parts. Cleaning and spraying, painting. Two to five quarter hours. Spring. Staff 71. Care and Service of Farm Tractors. A course given to help the farmer gain a knowledge of the tractor engine, adjustment, trouble shooting, performance and serving of farm tractors. Two to five quarter hours. Autumn, Winter. Staff 73. Farm Tractor Engines. Training in the repair, reconditioning and servicing of the modern tractor engine; practical training given in disassembly, assembly, reconditioning and servicing the engine. Two quarter hours. Winter. Staff DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY AND FORESTRY S. P. Hayes, R. W. Monk Botany 1. Principles of General Botany. A course devoted to the study of the anatomy, physiology, inheritance, and life history of members of a representative series of algae, fungi, mosses, ferns, and higher plants. Four lectures and one laboratory period a week. Five quarter hours. Autumn. Hayes 2. General Botany. Special consideration given to the seed plants in treating general principles of plant biology. Four lectures and one laboratory period a week. Five quarter hours. Winter. Hayes 3. Plants Useful to Man. A general cultural course designed to give the student the history, origin, nature, and use of the more common plants and plant products utilized by man. Three lectures a week. Three quarter hours. Winter. (May not be given.) Staff 6. Spring Flora. A study of the local spring flora, giving training in the identification and classification of the higher plants.
