Show 20 weber college STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS AND ACTIVITIES Board of Control The students of the Weber College have constituted themselves into a self-governing body-known as the Associated Students of the Weber College. This body exercises control over all forms of activity in which students are interested, such as athletics, dramatics, publications, amusements and debating. The executive power of this organization is vested in a Board of Control. Athletics With such an organization in control of activities all phases of the student's life, recreational, athletic, social and theatrical, are provided for. The College is a member of the Intermountain Junior College League, which insures an interesting athletic program. Interclass and intercollegiate contests in football, basketball and track afford opportunity for all students in athletics. The Intermountain Junior College League Basketball Tournament is usually held in the Weber Gymnasium during the Winter Quarter. Public Speaking Contests The James L. Barker Extemporaneous Speaking Contest. To the class of the school attaining the highest number of credits in this contest, the James L. Barker Cup is awarded. weber college 21 The J. S. Lewis Extemporaneous Speaking Contest. The J. S. Lewis Medal is awarded to the winner by the J. S. Lewis Company. The Grant Oratorical Contest. To the successful competitor of this contest, President Heber J. Grant presents an autographed book. '05 Oratorical Contest This activity was established by the class of '05. The contestants, who are representatives of the various classes, are to deliver formal ten minute orations. The class winning has its numerals engraved on a silver cup presented by the class of '05. Literary Contest The Flora Eccles Douglas Literary Contest. Mrs. Flora Eccles Douglas awards annually three prizes for literary excellence in different forms of written composition; one of twenty dollars to the student producing the best poem; one of fifteen dollars to the author of the best short story; another of fifteen dollars to the student writing the best essay. Only regular students of the college are permitted to participate. Publications The Acorn is the school year-book. Its management is under the supervision of the English Department. The Weber Herald is the bi-weekly school paper edited and managed by the students of the college under the direction of the English department. The Weber Literary Journal is a monthly magazine reproducing students' work of special merit in poetry, essays and short stories. |
