Show 32 WEBER COLLEGE - OGDEN, UTAH Housing • All living arrangements for out-of-town women students are under the direct supervision of the Dean of Women. Accommodations for men students are under the supervision of the Dean of Men. The College maintains two dormitories, one for men and one for women. Board and room ranges in cost from $35 to $45 monthly, the average cost being about $38.50 a month for room and three meals a day. Financial Aid _ Scholarships are offered annually by the following organizations, individuals, and institutions: Chi Omega Alumnae gives a twenty-five dollar tuition scholarship to a first-year Weber College woman on the bases of (1) scholarship, (2) participation in student activities, and (3) personal qualifications that conform to Chi Omega standards of Hellenic culture and Christian ideals. The Junior Child Culture Club awards one full tuition scholarship of seventy-five dollars to a first-year College student upon the basis of scholarship together with a consideration of personal qualifications. The Ogden Branch of the American Association of University Women offers an annual twenty-five dollar tuition scholarship to a first- year college woman. The bases of selection are (1) high scholarship, and (2) personal worth. An additional ten-dollar cash award is given for the winning essay, debate, or any other project designated by the American Association of University Women. The Howard D. Merrill Memorial Scholarship, a full-tuition scholarship at Weber College, was established in 1943-1944 by Dr. and Mrs. L. S. Merrill in memory of their son, a student of Weber College for the'year 1935-1936, and a graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1941. Ensign Merrill was killed in action at Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, the first from Weber College and Ogden City to die in the service of his country in the event that precipitated the United States declaration of war against Japan in World War II. The scholarship was created in the belief that great benefit would accrue to any student who would "emulate the spirit of determination, helpfulness, and courage that so completely characterized Howard D. Merrill." Higher institutions of learning annually extend scholarships to Weber College graduates. The Utah State Agricultural College, The University of Utah, and the Brigham Young University each give one or more full- tuition scholarships. Students recommended from Weber College have been successful in obtaining scholarships from the University of Southern California, Occidental College, University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and the College of the Pacific. Weber College students have also won the Willard D. Thompson Scholarship to the University of California, the Henry Newell Scholarship to Stanford University; and through competitive examination, entrance to the California Institute of Technology. Weber College offers scholarships tp incoming freshmen and returning sophomores. Recipients of the freshmen scholarships are determined by the principals of the high schools from which the students are graduated, and the number of awards to any one high school in attendance at Weber College at the time the scholarship grants are made. In addition to these general scholarships, Weber College annually awards a varying WEBER COLLEGE - OGDEN, UTAH 33 number of special music scholarships, some full and some part-tuition. The recipients are selected by the instructor of music at Weber College and are passed upon by the President of the College and the Faculty committee on awards and scholarships. There* are also several part- time and full-tuition scholarships in the fields of speech, English, and athletics. The recipients are selected in the same manner as they are for music. A few scholarships are distributed directly by the Faculty committee on awards and scholarships. Weber College maintains a Student Aid Fund administered by the Student Aid. Deserving students are assisted in finding employment at the College or in industry. The Weber College Faculty Women maintains a small loan fund to assist a limited number of students. The loans are paid back to this organization by September of the school year after the loan is made. Application for this service may be made to the Weber College Treasurer. The Ogden Rotary Club maintains a sizable loan fund for worthy students. Placement and Follow-up Bureau The purpose of the Weber College Placement and Follow-up Bureau is two fold: (1) to assist students to obtain part-time work while attending the College, and (2) to assist graduates to obtain permanent positions. The Bureau works in cooperation with the United States Employment Service to place every student who is seeking employment, and to follow-up at all times the employment needs of the business and industrial firms of the State. Out-of-class Activities Weber College considers an important program in its curriculum to be its out-of-class activities which include student government, student activities sponsored by students and departments of the College, and community activities. STUDENT GOVERNMENT The Associated Students of Weber College, which includes all students who have paid all fees prescribed by joint action of the State Board of Education and the Associated Students of Weber College, extends the privileges of the right to vote in all elections under the control of the student body, the right to become a candidate for office within the rules and regulations governing these positions, and the right to such other privileges as may be determined by the Board of Control. The executive officers of the organization consist of a president, a vice-president, a secretary, a treasurer, a business manager, and two additional freshmen representatives. The appointive officers consist of the staffs of the various authorized student body publications, manager of athletics, manager of dramatics, cheer leaders, and such other appointive officers as may be provided by the Board of Control. The Association serves to promote the scholastic and social welfare of the College, to insure a spirit of harmony and cooperation, and to regulate student activities. The Board of Control, made up of both faculty and student representatives, is the legislating body that apportions school money and appoints committees and certain designated student staff officers. |
