Show 36 WEBER COLLEGE - OGDEN, UTAH Debating has as its curricular basis a course in argumentation. Students who represent the College in interscholastic competition are chosen upon merit from the College generally. Participation in three intercollegiate debates or discussions makes a student eligible for membership in the Utah Alpha Chapter of Phi Rho Pi, national honorary debating society. The Weber College Debate and Speech Tournament for high schools in the Intermountain Region is sponsored by the Department each year. Extempore speaking is encouraged as a regular class activity in English and Speech. The Department further conducts a Novitiate Contest in extempore speaking, the purpose of which is to orient new students in Weber College and to initiate them into the speech program of the College. The two winners of this contest represent the Freshman Class in the James L. Barker Contest. The James L. Barker Contest was originated for the purpose of stimulating interest in extempore speaking and of encouraging competition between freshmen and sophomore students. The winner of the contest is honored by having the numerals of his class engraved upon a silver cup, and by receiving an individual cash award of ten dollars provided by the donor, Professor James L. Barker. Impromptu speech competition among individual participants is encouraged particularly by the Anderson Jewelry Company Award, a gold medal presented each year by this Company to the winner of an annual impromptu speech contest conducted by the Department. A major inter-collegiate oratorical contest on the subject of "Americanism," sponsored by the Ogden Chamber of Commerce each year in the interest of promoting American ideals, is also conducted by the Department. The Chamber of Commerce provides as a permanent College possession a gold cup on which is inscribed the name of the winner and his class numerals. The winner receives a gold medal. Students who distinguish themselves in forensics may qualify for contests held with other colleges within the State and elsewhere. Such contests include debating, extempore, impromptu, oratory, interpretative reading, and poetry reading. Students who meet the requirements may achieve membership in the Utah Alpha Chapter of Phi Rho Pi, national honorary forensic society. Drama. Play production at Weber College is carried on through the joint effort of the College and Ogden City Recreation Department under the direct management of Ogden Community Theatre. This organization took effect in 1944-45 and sponsors the various aspects of dramatic enterprise expressive of the community interest as a whole. This union of college and community interests assures the student superior opportunities for theatre experience in the following ways: (1) it assures him an expanded program and, in consequence, increased opportunity for roles, (2) it guarantees a greater and more advanced opportunity for stage and technical crews, (3) it provides superior training in acting as a result of opportunity for the students in casts composed of persons possessing greatest experience and finest abilities in the community, (4) it establishes a greater enthusiasm for plays on the part not only of players but of audiences as well, yet centers the whole enterprise of the community in the College itself. WEBER COLLEGE - OGDEN, UTAH 37 The Department of Music provides for student participation in both choral and instrumental activities. Each year those whose interests are in the field of choral music concentrate their efforts upon the presentation of the traditional opera, a Christmas Oratorio and three formal concerts. Choral activities center around the College Choir. There are six smaller ensemble singing units: The Dorian Singers, a selected group of male vocalists; the Musettes, a traditional choral group of women; the Mixed Quartet; the Symphonettes, consisting of fifteen women and one male soloist; the Trio; and the Duet. The Soloists Club includes only those selected singers who have reached a cultural state in their developement where they can represent Weber College as vocal soloists before the public. These combined musical organizations unite their efforts once or twice during the College year to present a formal concert. It is the aim of the Department of Music to maintain both a band of standard instrumentation and an orchestra of symphonic proportion, and to encourage musical growth through the study and public performance of the best in musical literature. These groups participate in at least three formal concerts each year in conjunction with the choral groups. The Department of Physical Education provides for mass participation as well as for the exceptional athlete. The Department teaches the fundamental skills and strategy in various activities in the physical education classes. The program of intramural activities is provided for the mass of students. Competition is organized in a large variety of sports so that all members of the student body may compete in activities of their choice. The program is planned for the various groups on the campus as well as for all unaffiliated students. Two awards are given: a cup for the organized group massing the greatest number of points during the year, and a medal for the individual student massing the greatest number of points during the year. The program is largely in the hands of student managers and directors under the supervision of the Physical Education Department. Intramural sports are organized in the belief that the following purposes of the program serve the vital interests of young people: (1) recreation, (2) social contacts, (3) group sports, (4) health, and (5) permanent interest in sports. During the war emergency period, special emphasis will be placed upon all intramural activities. The Womens' Athletic Association aims to develop "A sport for every girl and a girl for every sport." The intramural program of the W.A.A. is divided into sections: club competition, and individual competition. Social clubs and unaffiliated teams compete for the traveling trophy which is presented to the winning team in the spring of each year. A club winning the trophy three times becomes the permanent owner. Recognition is given to individual sport winners. Five quarters of participating in athletics even though a girl may not be a winner, make her eligible to receive individual recognition. The program of interscholastic athletics is designed for the exceptional athlete. Interscholastic competition is provided in football, basketball, swimming, wrestling, boxing, fencing, tennis, track and field. These sports provide competition between the junior colleges of Utah and Idaho. Regular schedules are arranged for the various events in the Intermountain Junior College Athletic Association. |
