Show The Pioneer Post Volume X Issue 4 Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter April Earthquake Preparation This month we want to remind you to look at preventative steps you might take to prevent more damage from occurring during an earthquake. The event in Wells, Nevada should be a wake up call. FEMA recommends the following protective measures that you can take against an earthquake: Repair defective electrical wiring, leaky gas lines, and inflexible utility connections. Bolt down and secure to the wall studs, your water heater, refrigerator, furnace, and gas appliances. Place large or heavy objects on lower shelves. Fasten shelves, mirrors, secure pictures on walls. Brace high and top heavy objects. Store bottled foods, glass, china, and breakables on low shelves or in cabinets that fasten shut. Anchor overhead light fixtures. Be sure residence is anchored to foundation. Install flexible pipe fittings for gas and water. Locate safe spots in each room under a sturdy table or against an inside wall. Use this information in your family drills. Hold family drills.( Have a practiced family plan in place. FEMA recommends the following during an earthquake: Take cover under a sturdy desk, table or bench or against an inside wall and hold on. If there isn't a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an corner. Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors, walls or anything that could fall. Stay in bed if you are there, hold on and protect your head with a pillow, unless you are under a heavy light fixture that could fall. Use a door way for a shelter only if it is close to you and you know it is strongly supported. Stay inside until the shaking has stopped and it is safe to go outside. Be aware that the electricity may go out. _Don't use elevators._ Spring Cleaning Days It is finally spring! Time to clean up that yard and remove all that junk that accumulated over the winter. This city is to help during the Spring Cleaning Days. A dumpster will be located at Marriott Park and at Slaterville Park. Residents are free to use these dumpsters to dispose of fall waste. The dumpsters will be provided at the parks April 18-20. This complimentary service is sponsored by Marriott-Slaterville City and Waste Management as part of the city's garbage contract._ Mosquito Abatement In warm weather, it takes 10 days for a mosquito egg to develop into an adult. This means in a good weather year, one mosquito can produce 15 generations. In six generations, an average mosquito laying 100 eggs can have 31 billion decedents. You get the picture. Mosquito abatement cannot get everywhere there is standing water.
