Show MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE CITY HISTORY July 2008 Residents of Marriott-Slaterville City can always look forward to lots of fun during the July Fourth Independence Day Celebration. It began, as usual, with the annual golf tournament, held this year at the Ben Lomond Golf Course, under the direction of Danny Brown, on July 2, 2008. About 40 people participated, and scored so well that three teams tied for first place. Robert Hirschi was in charge of the run from the Marriott Park to the Marriott-Slaterville L.D.S. church and back. Ryan Ortega won the men's race, with Jo Gullo winning for the women. Lindsey Slater Ortega, who lived in our city until her recent marriage, came in second. The parade from 700 South to the Marriott Park began at 10:30 a.m. A mis-communication caused the parade to start early. There were plenty of decorated tricycles, bicycles, wagons, and floats to cheer on. Winners were: First place, Spencer Okey and Friends (Rock Band Float); 2nd place, Aaron Greer; 3rd place, Toad's Mini Golf and Arcade; Most Effort, Will Holley and sons; Least Effort, Sheriff's Office/Fire Department, and People's Choice, Kerry Gibson (because he gave out popsicies!) Hamburgers and hot dogs were cooked and disbursed by the City Council, with many hungry customers to purchase their wares. In the afternoon a baby contest was held. Parker Crookston, son of Neal and Jamie Crookston, was named King of the 1 to 2 years division. Cody Arnell, son of Nathan and Michelle Arnell, was King of those under one year. Maycee Westergard, daughter of Sam and Molly Westergard, was selected Queen. Maycee Fillpot, daughter of Brad and Amy Fillpot, was 1st Princess, with James Katherine Roundy, daughter of Cortney and Kayla Deru-Roundy, as 2nd Princess. Among the games and contests during the day were the Giant Slide, the Candy Cannon, and several Pie Eating Contests with numerous ties. Among the winners were Greg Lewis, Matt Pittman of the Sheriff's Department, and Shay Holley. Our reporter said Shay cheated, but he said he won! Lots of kids showed remarkable speed and capacity in their pie eating. A raffle was held this year, with Lisa Panter the winner of the grand prize, a swing. Winner of the IPOD was Michelle Hodson. Mayor Keith Butler pronounced the celebration a big success, thanking all who helped and were involved. When it was time to clean up, everyone joined in and assisted. Summer is a busy time for construction, and The Pioneer Post for July listed many projects being carried out or planned. Roads in Spencer Farms and Mill Creek Meadows are to be chip sealed. Skin patch and chip seal from the Les Syme residence at 700 South 2050 West to the Shay Holley home at 2250 West will be done. Skin patch and full chip seal on 1200 West from the IRS Annex to Wahlquist Junior High is planned. A 27" storm drain line from 12th Street to 800 South will be installed. The Slaterville Bowery will be demolished and rebuilt. The Marriott Park will be fenced and playground equipment installed. UDOT projects will include utility work reconstruction of 12th Street from I-15 to Washington Blvd. At the July council meeting, Mayor Butler announced that, unfortunately, the chip seal projects will not be done, due to the oil shortage. The county did not receive its oil order and projects all over the county are cancelled. UDOT will complete the reconstruction of 400 North between I-15 and S.R. 126 at their expense. The road will be closed two days for the reconstruction. The City Council met on July 17, 2008, at the regular council meeting, to consider several matters of city business. Kim Slater and Delbert Hodson were excused. Business licenses were approved for the following: Les Olson Company, 1750 West, 1200 South Copier and printer sales and service Intermountain Farmers Assn., 1069 West. 1200 S. Farm general retail |
