Show MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE CITY HISTORY SEPTEMBER 1999 Fall began almost without notice. Summer seemed to linger longer than usual this year. As in August, intensive planning continued. The general plan became a most controversial issue brought before the City Council, and an extra City Council meeting was scheduled with the sole purpose of considering this plan. Additionally, the city continued with general start up activities, all of which would be impossible to note. The general plan has been the first major controversy in the city. During the City Council meeting on September 30, 1999, this plan was presented to a large audience of over 60 residents. Many voiced their ideal of preserving the rural atmosphere of the Marriott-Slaterville, other stated their specific ideas for the future of the community. City officials learned quickly that planning decisions are difficult and not easily made. Several new ordinances were also passed during the month. Most of the new ordinances have been modeled after those of Weber County (that became invalid upon our incorporation). Others were determined to be important for the new city government. For example, our City Council felt that the problem of alcoholism and drunk driving is serious enough that they passed a Beer License and Prohibition Ordinance that is one of the strictest in the Northern Utah. It was modeled after Boulder Town's (Southern Utah) ordinance after that town successfully thwarted an attempt to overturn the ordinance at the Supreme Court. Also notable this month, James Elmer created a seal for the city using his expertise at design graphics. The City Council passed ordinance 99-7 establishing the city seal and flag which Mr. Elmer designed. |
