Show President Holley, and other City Council members offered splendid commendations to these honored citizens. After the December 16, 1999, City Council meeting a Christmas Party was hosted for all of the many volunteers who have served the city over the past months. About 40 guests attended the Christmas Party. Shauna Meyerhoffer, of Community Events, planned the party and many other joined in to make the activity a success. It is anticipated that this may become an annual event. Many of the general day-to-day affairs of the city office through the month included the issuance of new business for 2000, year-end planning, file maintenance, and general office organization in preparation for the upcoming year. It should also be noted this month that residents for several years have worked to give input to the reuse of the Defense Depot Ogden since the base has closed and was essentially given by the U.S. Government to Ogden City. The DDO area was actually established from land of the Marriott and Slaterville communities when it was taken from local residents in the 1940s. Much pain occurred in the community when this land was taken by the government as homes were razed and farms raised to make way for the military. It was a tragic time in our Marriott and Slaterville history. This has been compounded by the recent actions of Ogden City and the Boyer Corporation. Ogden claims that they annexed the DDO from Marriott-Slaterville sometime in the 1980s, and as a result when the military base closed, it was returned to Ogden rather than the community from which it was taken. For years Marriott-Slaterville has tried to work with Ogden on this issue. First as citizens, then as a township and finally as a city. Fortunately, we were able to procure the use of our 2 |
