Show MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE CITY HISTORY DECEMBER 1999 December brought to a close not only the century, but also our city's first six months of operation. This month has been one of reflection as we, as a society, a state and nation, remember the momentous and ignominious moments of the past century and millennium. Hopefully, our future generations may learn from mistakes of the past through the history preserved today. Orvil Holley, the City Council President, has encouraged the city to create a Youth Council for residents in the community who are enrolled in the 9th to 12th grades. The mission of the Youth Council is to provide an additional opportunity for youth to develop mature citizenship, leadership, a sense of personal achievement, and an understanding of government. Duncan Murray researched models of Youth Councils in other cities, especially Sunset City. Then, applications for the newly proposed Youth Council were distributed in the city's monthly newsletters. Six (6) youth residents responded to compose the first Youth Council for Marriott-Slaterville, namely: Heather Holley, Chase Holley, Ashley Currie, Marc Deru, Jeni Okey, and Kyley Slater. Danielle Elmer has also recently applied. The Youth Council advisor is Sherry Morris. The city plans to sponsor a variety of beneficial activities for these youth in the future. On December 16, 1999, the City Council passed Resolution 99-V honoring outgoing council member Ren Meyerhoffer for his service to the city. Council member Meyerhoffer was elected in February to serve a six month term on the first City Council for Marriott-Slaterville. Also passed was Resolution 99-W honoring the extensive volunteer efforts of Planning Commission Chair Randy Phipps and City Hall Custodian Shirley Nelson. Mayor Butler, |
