Show James L. Barker Our Principal Many changes have come over Weber since last year. One of the most noticeable and most important is the change of the principal of the Academy. Prof. W. W. Henderson resigned his position last year and Prof. James L. Barker now acts in this capacity. James P. Barker was born July 27, 1880, at North Ogden. In 1901 he completed the first great epoch of his educational career when he received his B. A. degree from the University of Utah. He then left the school room for a time and spent three profitable years on a Swiss mission, most of the time in Vienna, Austria. In 1905 and 1906 he was a teacher at the Ogden High School. Professor Barker from 1907 until 1914 has been professor of languages at the B. Y. U. of Provo, but the greater part of the time was on leave of absence. In 1907-'08 he was a student at the universities of Geneva and Neuchatel. In 1909 he attended the spring semester at Neuchatel and Marburg. From 1910 to 1914 he was a student of the Catholic Institute of Paris and the College of France. In 1912 Professor Barker received the degree Lie es Let. Studying for over a year after receiving his degree, he returned in August of 1913 to take up his work at the B. Y. U. In the fall of 1914 he came to Weber to act as principal of the institution. We welcome Brother Barker to our school. We know that we now have at the head of our dear old school all that could be desired by anyone. Pie is a thorough student; one of the most learned men in the West. Also he is a leader and an example of true manhood, who can guide us in the daily moulding of our lives. He practices as well as advocates all that is clean, noble, beautiful, and good. He is a man whom we are proud to have at our head. We take this means of expressing our appreciation to Brother Barker for all he has done to help Weber; for the interest he has taken in the students individually, in the different classes, in the Student Body organization, in the tennis courts, and in the Acorn. We appreciate his efforts, and we know that the students are behind him in all his efforts for making a bigger and better Weber. |
