Show DEBATING In years past Weber decided to do big things in debating, and she did them. This year we have also set our aims high, and there is no reason why the same means that have won us laurels in the past should not bring splendid results during this school year. A debating society, something new at the Academy, has lately been organized, and by the time serious work is going on, its membership will be about sixty. The officers were chosen at the first meeting, and are as follows: LeRoy Leishman President Rae Lofgreen Vice-President Clarence Anderson Secretary and Treasurer Before going actively into debating itself, a great deal is being done in the line of extemporaneous speaking. As a result of the work of the society, inter-class contests in extemporaneous speaking are being held every two weeks, and in this the Seniors at present hold the honors. The debating society affords excellent means of development along the lines of intellectual combat, and every student who is interested in anything that upbuilds the mind should put his shoulder to the wheel. ATHLETICS Tennis A short time after the opening of school this year it was decided to add tennis to our list of sports. The question was put before the students and it met with much favor. So the back lot was cleared of all rubbish and trees and put into condition for two large tennis courts. Through the courtesy of Mr. Perry, one hundred loads of clay were hauled from the Perry property and put on the court. All the work was done by the students. We are glad that we are now able to add tennis to our athletic activities, and we intend to make it of much interest and value to the students. Here is another opportunity for students to get out and show their loyalty to Weber. Basketball The outlook for a winning team this season is not as bright as it might be. Although we have three of last year's men back, we have lost men whose places it will be hard to fill. Of last year's team we lost Richards, at center, who is attending the U. of U.; Layman, a forward; Bassett, a forward, who is now working:in California; Ferrin, a guard. But we have Belnap, our speedy forward, Herbert and Wilde, our guards, back with us again. These men, with Miller, Nixon, Heiner and Critchlow of last year's second team, should round into a fast group of players for this year. A Word from the Coach This is not a boast. Our school is judged by the standard of our athletic teams. So if hard work and lots of it will help win, then our school will be kept up to the high standard held for many years past. |
