Show MADD campaign imilar r driv- on for ially in ocused rinking ogress.” nation- grades ashing- of the ve— r 20 years aren't going to change their ways until we change the laws in this country, so we're trying to reach kids," Sieverts said. "This type of thing gives kids a good basis for positive peer pressure to know they can have fun without drinking or taking drugs." In keeping with MADD's youthful focus, Alad¬din's Castle arcades in Ogden and Layton will kick off Project Red Ribbon by sponsoring the "Red Ribbon Rally" promotion this week. Sieverts said the arcades will donate half the proceeds from their Pole Position II video games during those days. Sieverts said Burger King restaurants across the Wasatch Front also will be distributing red ribbons during the holiday season. Red Cross urges teenagers to ‘say no to sex’ By CHERYL ARCHIBALD Standard-Examiner staff Local school officials are cautiously optimistic about a new Red Cross film on AIDS that teaches teenagers to “say no to sex” or else use condoms for protection. The American Red Cross film, “A Letter From Brian,” shows a teenage couple who decide to wait to have sex after learning the girl’s former boyfriend has AIDS. A workbook with questions and answers on the causes and prevention of AIDS accompanies the film. Both were released by the national organization about three months ago, said Jane Erickson, health services coordinator for Red Cross Bonneville chapter in Ogden. The film has been show to Ogden School District curriculum specialists, and is scheduled to be shown to Weber School District curriculum specialists, and is scheduled to be shown to Weber School District officials to get approval for use in high schools, Erickson said. It has also been shown at a number of churches and to local health agency officials, she said. Erickson said the Red Cross was concerned that some educators would feel the film violated a state law requiring morality to be taught in schools. But she said the districts are enthused “because the film does not teach sex—just teaches how to prevent the disease.” Cathy Ortega, a curriculum supervisor with the Ogden School District, said she was favorably impressed by the film. “I’ve seen many and think it’s one of the best I’ve seen. They presented it in a more positive way, rather than encourage kids to do things. See AIDS on 2D |
