Teens need AIDS education AIDS, A letter to parents: As a concerned parent, I would like to address the issue of AIDS as portrayed through the film, "A Letter from Brian." I saw the film and, yes, they mentioned the "C" word. However, that was not the sole intent of the film. I heard only the facts. The foul language, what part was that? Do you love your child enough to give him the facts — cold hard facts. Contracting AIDS is cold, hard, and permanent. AIDS is a scary subject and will not go away by sweeping it under the carpet. We are not giving our children credit for being intelli¬gent enough to deal with the film and getting the information out of it that was intended. Our chil¬dren are not fools...we are fight¬ing for them...they need to be informed. As Utahns we have to look at the statistics on unwed mothers to realize that abstinence is not practiced by all before marriage. Although we wish it were. Don't let us shortchange those who are precious in his sight. One cannot talk about AIDS and its prevention without men¬tioning sex. We have films that discuss reproduction, why not combine the two. Also, what does the state law have to do with the best interest of your child? Let's get the law changed to incorpo¬rate the prevention of AIDS. Let's get the permission slips out too. Parents who would like for their children to view this film are helping to protect their most precious asset, and our hope for tomorrow. Call your school. Send a note. Don't jeopardize your child because of a few who disagree. As I stated earlier, I saw "A Letter from Brian," and so did my children, aged 18, 14 and 11.
