C. W. Miley, 45th | Rifle Co., U.S. Marine Reserve, | told Ogden Kiwanians Wednesday. iia The guest speaker said that it was not until 1818 that Congress). selected the 13 stripes with) single stars added for each new| state. | | Before that there was the| Betsy Ross flag, with 13 stripes| jand 13 stars in a circular pat- _|tern; the Grand Union flag flown by General George Washington; and the 15 stripes, 15 stars. % The latter has historic sig: nificance because it was flying, at Ft. McHenry, Md., where it inspired the “Star Spanglec Banner.” as The rules and customs that. ‘have been handed down by an‘| cestors were discussed by S.Sgt. Miley. He said that when the |flag approaches as in a parade, j}men in civilian dress should place their hat over their heart | when the flag is about six paces '|away. If they are not wearin '|a hat, then they place the right hand over the heart. ._ sa The flag should be shown at all civic functions and should be displayed on the speaker’s right unless it is off the plat form. Then it should be on the | speaker’s left. There is only one place where janother pennant flies over the American flag in this count and that is at the United Na- jtions Building in New York where the U.N. flag is flown over it. ae AS “Tf the flag must be destroy. ed; | it should be burned,’’ Sgt. Mililey. | Said. “No other way is respectful.” fo |
