Above, a crew strings line to lay the first of several catwalks across the river. In a staging area too| small to accommodate even a Caterpillar tractor, miners blasted and then shoveled muck to build up the riverbanks. With no foothold at all on the Nevada side, miners drove ring bolts into stone to string a cable suspension footbridge, and then they set about hacking a shelf out of the cliff. Four diversion tunnels would be drilled the width of a four-lane tunnel and the height of a five-story building. To speed the work, engineers contrived a jumbo drill built around the chassis of an International chain-drive truck, by welding on a steel skeleton to support four platforms. Two platforms supported miners while the other platforms carried racks of drill steel. |

Show "The muck had to be hauled up the hill on either side of the river. On the Arizona side we went straight up the riverbank to a dump area that was on a canyon heading into the river."10 - Theodore Garrett "The jumbo was for drilling. They'd back that up against the wall and drill out all the holes, then move it over and drill out another set of holes. Then we'd all jump in there, blow out the holes, load them with dynamite, and shoot. There was no such thing as a powderman. Everybody was a powderman... They left a flat face on the bottom [of the tunnel] so it would make a good road for the trucks to drive on to haul the muck out." - Joe Kine Above, a crew strings line to lay the first of several catwalks across the river.
