The hostile elements in the desert were never quiescent for long. In January 1932, a fierce dust storm whirled through the canyon and blasted Boulder City. Above, men move vehicles from beneath the falling eaves of a dormitory in order to avoid damage to the cars. Plans were approved for the Boulder City Theatre in January 1932, and it was built by the Nevada Construction Company. The largest theater in Nevada, it held over seven hundred people and featured films, special attractions, and vaudeville performances. Stars such as Will Rogers and Boris Karloff performed there. Show "There was people living up in Bootleg Canyon out west of Boulder City where they'd caught a bootlegger with a big still. They was living in all kinds of tents and shacks made of corrugated tin and powder boxes. We had a big wind here one day must have been 70 miles an hour. I went over to McKeeversville, and a friend of mine said, 'You ought to go up the wash with me and see what happened.' So I went up there, and every one of those tents and shacks was just flattened. "31 - Hobart Blair "Mr. [Earl] Brothers, who was the manager of the theater, started his shows at eleven in the morning so that the men who went to work at three in the afternoon could come in and rest and watch a movie or sleep, whichever they would rather, until the time to go to work. A great many men who lived in those little houses where they had absolutely no way of cooling and couldn't sleep during the day would spend hours down in the theater. Mr. Brothers was very happy to have them do it. He had matinees for the children, and he had little parties for the children.
