The Boulder City Company Stores provided men's and women's departments [shown above], a grocery and drug store, and miscellaneous goods. Gasoline, auto parts, and motor oil were about the only things not available for purchase at the company stores. When the government pleaded poverty, Six Companies built the first hospital and a surgeon's house nearby. Built of brick and white stucco on the northeast side of town, the L-shaped hospital included twenty beds and an orthopedic ward. An eight-bed isolation hospital for contagious diseases, called the Pest House, sat at the edge of the reservation. |

Show "My wife and I worked on a budget. We were wary about the next job and a rainy day. We knew we needed $18 every two weeks to buy groceries. My allowance every two weeks was $5, and my wife's allowance every two weeks was $3 $89 every two weeks to spend whatever way we wanted to spend it. -Saul "Red" Wixson "[The hospital] operated for the workers at the dam and was not available to the families of the dam workers, except in emergency. They had to go to Las Vegas for hospital care. We did have a doctor who was not connected with the hospital: Dr. [John] McDaniel. "Many of the babies were born in the homes in Boulder City. Dr. McDaniel delivered many of them on the screen porches of the little houses, with the fans drifting around. But evidently it was a healthy thing, because he never lost a mother or a baby."28 - Lillian Whalen The Boulder City Company Stores provided men's and women's departments [shown above], a grocery and drug store, and miscellaneous goods.
