An ingenious cable system moved men, equipment, and buckets of concrete around the dam site. Above, a skipload of workers travels into the canyon from the Arizona side of the abyss. Concrete pillars rose like window-less skyscrapers between the framework of wooden forms, as shown above on the upstream face of the dam. As bucket after bucket of concrete was poured, puddlers worked it smooth within the forms. |

Show "Oh, [the dam] not only grew daily, it grew nightly. I couldn't remember sleeping that hammers weren't going and stuff like that. And how the people on the swing shift slept, I'll never know."64 - Ila Clements Davey "A puddler is the one that pushes the concrete around with his feet. He wears hip boots. When we were doing puddling, of course, they'd bring the concrete down in buckets. Then you either opened the bottom or you had a chute that you opened. You tried to pour the concrete around to where you wanted it. Then you worked it with your feet. Of course, the concrete, when they drop it, it tends to separate. You can't have this. So you try to work this concrete in and out with your feet, just tromping up and down. "65 - Carl Merrill An ingenious cable system moved men, equipment, and buckets of concrete around the dam site.
