On paydays the workers queued up to receive their wages, minus any advances they may have drawn, often to purchase goods and usually from the company store. As Boulder City began to take shape, houses were at a premium. Housing from the 1932 Olympic Games was moved from California for the earliest temporary housing in Boulder City, and homes were moved from Las Vegas, as well. Buildings in the temporary camps were cannibalized for wood, and Six Companies carpenters (above) hammered together outhouses at a record pace. (Used with permission.23) |

Show "[Deputy sheriff] Bud Bodell was responsible for bringing the money in from the banks in Las Vegas to pay the workers... I can remember on payday, our office was filled with guns and extra policemen to bring the money in... It was a great time when they brought the payroll in. There was a window that opened on to the back of the [Six Companies office] building where they could just line up outside and get their checks. "22 - Alice Hamilton "By the end of 1931 most of the streets had been paved, the principal buildings were nearing completion, and concrete sidewalks lined the boulevards. All the cement, asphalt, and blocks of sandy undeveloped land trapped the sun's heat, while winds kicked up terrific dust storms... Secretary of the Interior Wilbur persuaded Congress to release more building funds to have a landscape gardener [by the name of Wilbur W. Weed] and to purchase trees and shrubs. "24 - Dennis McBride On paydays the workers queued up to receive their wages, minus any advances they may have drawn, often to purchase goods and usually from the company store.
