Show Acknowledgments In October 1999, the late Edmund Wattis Littlefield and BHP donated the Utah Construction/Utah International Collection to the Stewart Library Special Collections. Widely respected for his business acumen, Littlefield was a former company president and chairman, as well as a grandson of founder Edmund O. Wattis. A generous gift from the William H. & Mattie Wattis Harris Foundation assisted in processing and preserving this extensive collection of photographs, business records, correspondence, and artifacts. Descendants of the founding families have provided additional support to underwrite annual symposia. Introduction This book features three early projects of the Utah Construction Company: the Feather River line built for Western Pacific from Oroville, California, to Salt Lake City, Utah, between 1900-1905; a line from Tepic to La Quemada built for Southern Pacific in the State of Nayarit, Mexico, between 1923-1927; and the grand opening in 1927 of a branch line between Klamath Falls, Oregon, and Alturas, California, also built for Southern Pacific. Originally employed by the rail-building Corey Brothers companies, the Wattis brothers continued that association for a time after forming their own company. None could know that the fledgling Utah Construction Company had begun what became a remarkable journey through the annals of American industry. |
