OCR Text	Show Surveyors chose Beckwourth Pass, in northern Nevada, since it lay some 2,000 feet lower than the Southern Pacific line over Donner Summit. Although the new track extended 150 miles longer than the higher route, it boasted a gentle 1 percent grade and a maximum curvature of 20 degrees. It also in-cluded a 75-mile reach through the scenic Feather River Canyon. In 1817 a Spanish explorer, Don Luis A. Arguello, led a party up the bird-populated canyon and named the river El Rio de las Plumas.
